Influenced by a French prototype, Drottningholm Palace was built in the 1600s by architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder by commission of Queen Hedvig Eleonora, and today is the Swedish royal family’s permanent residence. The combination of the Palace itself, the exotic Chinese Pavilion pleasure palace, the 18th-century Court Theatre and the magnificent gardens make a visit to Drottningholm a unique experience.
The Court Theatre, with its original scenery, more than 200-year-old stage machinery and interior decoration remains virtually unchanged since its completion.
In 1991, Drottningholm was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of places that are considered to be of outstanding value to humanity, representing the best examples of the world’s cultural and natural heritage.
