Practical Tourist Information


  • Stockholm Tourist Information is available at Frihamnen 638 and Stadsgården 165/167 quays. Open during cruise calls.

Climate
Sweden has four distinct seasons, which differ depending on where you are in the country. The following average mid-day temperatures apply to Stockholm:

Currency Exchange
Numerous currency exchange offices are located in the city center. Credit cards are widely accepted. Euros and U.S. dollars are accepted in many, but not all, shops. Change is given in Swedish currency.

Tap water is of good quality and suitable for drinking everywhere in Sweden.

On Foot
Walk along the quayside from Stadsgården to the Old Town, guided by a blue line marked on the ground. Walk duration is approximately 20 minutes. From Frihamnen, we recommend taking a bus or taxi.

Post
Stamps can be bought at post offices, kiosks and Tourist Information Centers. The yellow post boxes should be used for mail going abroad. Stamps and post box services are available at Tourist Information Centers at the ports.
 
Religious Services
Sweden is predominantly a Christian Lutheran country. Church services are often held at 11.00 on Sundays. Most churches are open to the public during office hours.

Restaurants/Cafés
There are many restaurants and cafés in central Stockholm. There also is a café at the Frihamnen cruise terminal.
 
Sightseeing
Bus tours, guided in several languages, are offered by City Sightseeing. Another option is Open Top, which runs guided tours on double-decker buses, where you can get on and off at any stop along the route. Stockholm Sightseeing also organizes guided boat trips around the islands in the city center. Longer guided boat trips to Lake Mälaren or the Archipelago are operated year-round by Strömma Kanalbolaget. Tickets can be purchased at Stockholm Tourist Center.
 
Sightseeing/Shuttle Service from the Port Areas
Boat and bus sightseeing tours depart every 30 minutes for guided city tours, and shuttle busses stop regularly for further exploration on foot. Passes are valid for 24 hours.

Weekdays: 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
Saturdays: 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Souvenir shops are located in Tourist Information Centers.
 
Tax-Free Shopping
Non-EU residents have tax-free shopping privileges for goods intended for use outside Sweden. Refunds are 12.5 percent to 17.5 percent on every purchase over SEK 200 in shops affiliated with Global Refund. See below for information on tax-free shopping:
 
Tax refunds in three easy steps:
  1. Shopping: Shop where you see the Global Refund Tax Free Shopping sign and simply ask for your Global Refund Check.

  2. Go through customs: On leaving the country or the EU, show your purchase, receipts and passport to customs officials and have your Global Refund Checks validated.

  3. Obtain your refund: Collect your refund in cash at a nearby Cash Refund Office, or send the check to Global Refund for a bank check to be sent to your address or direct crediting to your credit card.
Global Refund also boards many cruise ships on arrival in Stockholm, making VAT refunds on Swedish purchases even easier. Please contact your cruise ship staff for the latest information.

Tipping
Service charge is always included in the price. To show your appreciation for good service, a small tip of approximately 10 percent could be given when taking a taxi or eating in a restaurant.
 
Theater and Concert Tickets
For information and tickets, visit the Stockholm Tourist Center in the city center or phone: +46-8-508 285 08. Tickets can also be bought online in advance on Ticnet » and then be picked up at the Stockholm Tourist Center when you arrive in Stockholm.
 
Toilets
Toilets are located next to the Tourist Information Center in Frihamnen.
 
Transportation by Bus, Metro and Commuter Trains
Stockholm’s public transport system covers the entire Stockholm region. Bus tickets must be purchased from a ticket machine before boarding. Ticket machines at the ports and at some city locations accept credit cards. A one-hour ticket (one zone) costs SEK 40. The Stockholm card or the SL Tourist Card entitles the holder to unlimited travel on public transport in and around Stockholm. These can be bought at Tourist Information Centers.
