The Ports of Stockholm is actively working to limit the environmental consequences of shipping, both within the framework of its own operations and with shipping companies and other partners.
Initiatives include:
- A sliding scale of port dues to reduce sulphur and nitrogen emissions from vessels.
- Improved waste management. All types of waste are accepted onshore, provided ample notice is given regarding hazardous materials and that all waste is sorted and packed in accordance with given instructions.
In 2000 the Ports of Stockholm launched the Environmental Buoy Award as a way of honoring notable environmental achievements in the field of shipping. After each cruise season, a special group at the Ports of Stockholm will nominate ship(s) based on certain criteria. The winner(s) will be announced at the Environmental Buoy ceremony scheduled during the Seatrade Convention in Miami. In addition, the Environmental Buoy Diploma can be awarded at any time during the year for achievements of a more limited character.
