Henrik von Arnold – new director
Henrik von Arnold has been appointed the new Director for the Convention Bureau within Stockholm Visitors Board. Mr. Von Arnold, who is a prominent and respected professional in the Tourism industry, will begin his new position on April 15th 2009.

Jumbo Hostel opens at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport
 (December 2008)
The world's first youth hostel in a real jumbo jet - a Boeing 747-200, will open at the entrance to Stockholm-Arlanda Airport in January 2009. The Jumbo was grounded back in November 2002 but is now ready to welcome guests onboard once again, this time with a new image and purpose. The old furnishings are partly preserved and the cockpit is furnished as a luxury suite. The cabin offers 72 beds.

Stockholm is now cheaper (September 2008)
According to Mercer’s 2008 Cost of Living Index, Stockholm is now considerably cheaper. In the space of a year, the Swedish capital has dropped eight places in the list of the world’s most expensive cities to a new position of number 31. Moscow is the world’s most expensive city, followed by Tokyo and London. Of the other Nordic capitals, Oslo is now in 4th place, with Copenhagen in 7th place and Helsinki in 21st place. Globe Arena area expands (September 2008)
Stockholm welcomes yet another arena for sports and events. The new arena, with its capacity for 30,000 spectators, will be a long-awaited complement to the existing Globe Arena and is due to open in 2012.

Many major congresses choose Stockholm
(April 2008)
Several major congresses have opted for Stockholm as their meeting destination over the years, and demand remains high. In 2008 Stockholm will host the Congress of the European Society of Medical Oncology - ESMO, with 10,000 participants, the FDI Annual World Dental Congress, with 10,000 participants, and the medical congress ERA-EDTA (European Renal Association – European Dialysis & Transplant Association), with 6,000 participants. 

Several congresses with over 10,000 delegates have also confirmed their choice of Stockholm for upcoming meetings. The urology congress EAU recently decided to have its 24th Annual European Association of Urology Congress in Stockholm in 2009, the diabetes congress EASD is planning to have its annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Stockholm in 2010, and the European Cancer Organisation, ECCO will be in Stockholm in 2011.


Volvo Ocean Race
Volvo Ocean Race 2009

One of the world’s top sailing races, Volvo Ocean Race (formerly known as Whitbread), will be conducting a stopover in Stockholm in June 2009. The fleet will be sailing into Stockholm’s harbours and mooring next to the royal castle. Kanholmsfjärden, close to Sandhamn in Stockholm, will be the venue for the final in-port race and final start prior to the finish in St Petersburg.

40 new direct flights!
  (April 2008)
Stockholm is continuing to attract new flight routes and airlines. In 2007, Stockholm gained just over 40 new direct flights. New destinations and airlines include Delta Airlines, which flies direct from Atlanta, USA and Qatar Airways, which flies from Doha in Qatar.
More new destinations are due in 2008. Low-price airline Ryanair has already confirmed the launch of 11 new direct flights to Stockholm during the spring.

Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre to open in 2010
(January 2008)
The construction of a new, exciting element in Stockholm's skyline has recently started. When the Stockholm Waterfront stands completed in 2010, the city centre of Stockholm will have a large congress centre with capacity for all types of events with up to 3 000 participant and banquet facilities for 2000 guests.

The property will also include a hotel, Rezidor Park Inn, with 418 rooms, as well as a view over both Riddarfjärden and the City Hall of Stockholm. The location creates unique conditions for communications and accessibility. Read more »



First Marriott hotel in Sweden  (January 2008)
The American hotel chain Marriott International opens its first hotel in Sweden in 2009. The hotel is being built in on the island of Kungsholmen in Stockholm and will have 272 rooms.

 New boutique hotel  - Hotel Stureplan
(January 2008)
A small boutique hotel is about to open right in the heart of Stockholm, perfectly situated at Stureplan. All rooms are individually decorated in 18th century Gustavian style with additional contemporary features. Another 3,000 hotel rooms  (October 2007)
A number of new hotels will open in Stockholm in the next few years, which will add around 3,000 hotel rooms to the city, ranging from 1 to 4 star standard. The conference hotel Clarion Hotel Sign will open in February 2008 and will be the largest hotel in Stockholm with its 558 rooms. www.clarionsign.com
The new hotels include a couple of budget establishments. The first one, Hotel Micro, opens in November followed by the new Moment Hotels chain www.hotelmicro.se , www.momenthotels.se 
 


Scandic - Green Hotel Chain!

Stockholm's New Meeting Place in ICT-Centre (June 2007)

To meet increased national and international demand, Stockholm International Fairs is expanding the capacity of its exhibition halls. The new extension, which is expected to be ready by December 2009, will further strengthen Stockholm International Fairs' position as Northern Europe's biggest trade fair and congress centre.
